The OSMI 2016 survey results are part of Data Society's Dataset Challenge for the month of March

March 4th, 2017

Data Society is an online training program for those interested in becoming data scientists. They recently came up with an idea to have a monthly "Dataset Challenge" using real-world datasets on data.world; you can read more about the partnership between Data Society and data.world in this Medium post.

It just so happens that the OSMI 2016 survey results were already up on data.world and ready for analysis, so we're very grateful to have been chosen as the data source for the inaugural "Dataset Challenge"! Hopefully that means we'll get some fresh eyes on the results, with new ideas for how to analyze them.

To participate in the challenge, post an analysis or visualization on the “Data Society Challenge” discussion thread by April 1, 2017. You may also want to check out our Hypotheses & Questions thread. Impressive entries will be highlighted in data.world’s Datasets Digest newsletter as well as Data Society's newsletter, featured in data.world’s Distinct Values blog, and promoted on social media. Plus, data.world will send the top five challenge participants a data.world swag bag.

A few words to the transgender community

February 23rd, 2017

In the wake of last night's news about a rollback of protections for transgender students, OSMI's thoughts are with the transgender community today. Suicide is particularly prevalent among transgender individuals; the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey Report, the largest survey examining the experiences of transgender people in the United States, found that 40% of its 27,715 respondents have attempted suicide in their lifetime—nearly nine times the attempted suicide rate in the U.S. population (4.6%). (source)

If you or someone you know is having a particularly hard time today, please seek immediate help by calling the Trans Lifeline at (877) 565-8860 in the U.S. or (877) 330-6366 in Canada. Occasionally, they may be unreachable due to unusually high call volume; if that happens, other options include the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255, or if you're more comfortable with text messaging, CrisisTextLine.org provides anonymous SMS-based support if you text "HOME" to 741741. All services are free and available 24/7.
